concerns about current tools

To better understand how users interact with current productivity apps, one-on-one interviews were conducted.

After speaking with 11 undergrad students, I found two emerging themes summed up into pain points:

Time Sensitivity

73% of students prioritize speed and accuracy when completing tasks but find setting tasks in apps counterintuitive.

Fading Motivation

82% of students struggle to visualize progress as workload increases, leading to diminishing motivation.

Developing Empathy with Users…

To minimize unconscious biases tied to user personas, I used a variation of archetypes to organize user behavioral patterns into persona groups. This method allowed more data-driven decisions, detached from demographic labels.

The Naive Realist

Always seeking the most efficient way to finish work. The realist thinks they have it all figured out but sometimes expectation falls short to reality.

Core Needs

  • Need to set realistic, achievable goals

  • Cares about ease of use and efficiency

Behaviour

  • Would rather rely on themselves than to get a second opinion or seek support

The Free-spirit Visualizer

Likes to let their mind wonder. Mundane tasks seem dull and overwhelming compare to the world around them.

Core Needs

  • Need to be able to visualize progress

  • Extensive features are less critical compared to a fun, enjoyable journey

Behaviour

  • Would do just about anything to avoid boredom

An Untapped Opportunity

Upon analysing interview notes and reviewing personas, I noticed an emerging pattern.

Initiation

  1. Decides to

    set a goal

Uninformed Optimism

  1. Set unrealistic goal

Realisation

  1. Make excuses and

    take cheat days

Valley of Despair

  1. Expectation not

    met and lose hope

Success

  1. Boost motivation

    and insipre

Feeling..

worried

guilty

Feeling..

excited

hopeful

Feeling..

stress

frustrated

Feeling..

unmotivated

pessimistic

Feeling..

Opportunity

Students tend to start optimistically but often take a nose-dive to "valley of despair". This revealed that an impactful solution should be practical, efficient to use, and enjoyable to boost motivation.

A call for more Dynamic Assistance

I conduced a competitor analysis to analyze efficient, motivation-driven apps and identify potential gap in the productivity app market. Surprisingly, most popular apps lacked the ability to respond dynamically to user input and situational needs.

Most participants supported an AI-driven task list. Taking this into consideration, a system to hold users accountable and help them stay on task sounds promising. However, it necessitates a tracking algorithm to oversee progress, taking into account privacy issues, which increases the difficulty of development.

My Learnings

My Learnings

A good reminder to always ask "why"

A good reminder to always ask "why"

Designing a unique productivity solution to tackle student pain points was challenging. I learned that even a text-to-speech button benefits from micro-interactions, offering users immediate feedback on responsiveness.

This project was a good reminder to never lose sight of the problem you are solving and to consistently question the "why" behind every design decision, from the solution's intent to its implementation.

While crafting high-fidelity wireframes, I experimented with various layouts, styles, and designs. For next time, I would built on proven design patterns while being cognizant of when to innovate and push boundaries.
